Snoring, consequences and treatment

The highest risk associated with snoring is that it turns out to be a symptom of obstructive sleep apnea, which is the case for a third of heavy snorers.

What are the consequences?

The sound of snoring can cause multiple micro-arousals. A fragmented night like this loses quality and often prevents the sleeper from reaching deep sleep. Besides, micro-arousals cause an increase in nervous system activity, heart rate and blood pressure. Snoring can then lead to cardiovascular disorders (high blood pressure) as well as drowsiness and can even increase the risk of depression because of poor sleep quality.

What are the treatments?

Is it possible to treat snoring? Treatment for this sleep disorder can take two different forms.

Treatment: the mandibular orthosis

The mandibular advancement splint relieves snoring by maintaining the mandibula (lower jaw) forward. If a mandibular orthosis is prescribed, our sensor can be used by a doctor to determine the most suitable forward-facing setting for you.

Treatment: Surgical operations

The choice of operation depends on the origin of the snoring. It can be:

  • Removal of the tonsils
  • Rectification of the deviated nasal septum.

Prevent snoring

It is sometimes possible to reduce snoring by improving one's lifestyle. To this end, it is recommended to:

  • Maintain a balanced diet to maintain your weight or get rid of any excess weight.
  • Avoid alcohol and tobacco.
  • Avoid taking sleeping pills.

Also note that nasal congestion may be due to allergies and that once diagnosed and treated, your snoring may improve.

Does Sunrise relieve snoring?

Sunrise detects snoring by recording your breathing effort. Breathing effort is a greater or lesser difficulty in breathing, which causes snoring and has an impact on your health. If a respiratory effort is detected, you can share your Sunrise test results with your doctor in just one click. The doctor will consult your results and tell you how to proceed, all this without having to wait several weeks and right from home!
